Ewen Glass

07/22/2026

Darragh works in Booze Bargainz and his lack of interest
feels almost political.

His eyes light up, however, when someone brings an elaborate double-bodied bottle to the till. Coffee Liqueur. He runs a finger over its shoulders and seems younger than his, what, eighteen  years? These are his toys. He IDs me. When I say I'm forty he shrugs and I pour myself onto Ryland Road, considering the shape of his future, considering mine. Cheeks jolly with broken capillaries, a bag of toys in hand, I wonder if Darragh's been a good boy this year.

I Hate the Game and the Player

I hate the equipment,
the necessary uniforms.

I hate the rules and
all that's allowed.

I hate the outrage
and the alternative.

I hate those who don't play,
like that’s a virtue.

I hate the mascots.
Obviously.

I hate having scores.
I need scores.

I hate this unending season.
